Feb 27 - South Holston
Date: 2/27/08
Location: South Holston
Conditions: Overcast with sporadic light rain
low 50’s
Guide: Rhett Shroyer
Rusty and his good friend Fernando book a full
day wade on the South Holston. The conditions looked good for
the long time guest of Appalachian Angler. Expectations were
high as Rusty usually tops 30+ fish on every outing with the
Angler. We arrived at Jack’s at 8 am and fished below his house.
We managed to net more fifteen fish before lunch, on various
zebra midges and tiny mayfly patterns. Light nymph rigs drifted
through deeper riffles produced best. In the afternoon we headed
to a challenging big fish spot downstream. Finding fast currents
running over deep ledges is a good way to find a big feeding
brown trout. I rigged up with deeper nymph rigs and we hung into
a couple big browns and many other rainbows. The fish were
eating a size 22 black midge pattern and a size 20 mayfly nymph.
The last hour of the day the fishing was fantastic. The fish
went nuts over a bluewing and midge hatch and the guest pulled
in many more fish. We made sure to use precise light lined (6X)
nymph rigs that ticked the bottom, as this seemed to catch the
bigger fish. Rainy, overcast weather on the South Holston often
produces the best days and the biggest hatches.
