Report - Watauga Trophy Section
The blonde caddis, blue wing, and midge
hatches have been an everyday occurrence. The midges are
hatching heavily in the early morning and late evening hours.
Sandy bottoms have supported the thickest hatches. The blonde
caddis are hatching out of the riffle water in the late morning
and early evening. Blue wings have been showing up at different
times each day, usually late afternoon. Fish are being caught on
dries fairly easily, as the fish are letting down their guard
during heavy hatches. The black caddis hatch is right around the
corner. A few are being spotted here and there in the late
evening hours.
April 8-13 Watauga Trophy Section
The black caddis hatch is in full swing on the trophy
section. The bugs are size 12-16, mottled black, grey, with some
blonde caddis still coming off. Look to fish fast riffle water
during the early morning hatch as the fish are stacking up and
gorging on pupa. Good dry fly action is available all day. Don’t
be afraid to skitter your caddis fly across the water on a down
and across swing for exciting bites. Dry fly dropper rigs
consisting of elk hair patterns trailed with caddis pupa
patterns are producing very well. Lots of big fish are being
caught on deep water nymph rigs. At times we are fishing 10-12
ft. deep. Big hatches of caddis are coming off in the late
evening hours and fish can readily be caught on dry flies. A few
of the float trips have produced fish over five pounds. Most
anglers will have a shot a fish of this size on every trip
during the hatch. Give us call if you want to experience the
Watauga black caddis hatch. 828 963 5050.
